I have to admit, I’m really excited for “The Desolation of Smaug”. I have major issues with “The Hobbit: Part One” — the stone giants, the overlong, cartoonish chase scene in the mines, the ridiculous climax that looked like something out of a Warhammer parody — but, damn it, I LOVE Peter Jackson’s LOTR something fierce, and for all H1’s faults it felt like Middle-Earth, and that’s a place I love spending time in. The second one looks much better, but we’ll have to wait and see.
I was hoping the extended edition of Part One could resolve some of the problems I had with it — maybe it could set up the stone giants, make them feel appropriate or not so out of place, or trim some of the action (it is, after all, a director’s cut, PJ can do whatever he wants), invest more time with Bilbo, maybe actually give him something to do, fix the ending somehow, score it (the action climax) to the right music, instead of the Nazgul music, which should belong to them and only them . . . anyway. Sigh. I have issues with it.
Maybe someday there will be a great fan edit of Part One. Then, if PJ knocks Parts Two and Three out of the park, we will have another excellent Tolkien trilogy to watch obsessively on repeat. Here’s hoping!
(and, if not, I may just have to learn how to fan edit)
